What are Single-row Angular Contact Ball Bearings?

Single row angular contact ball bearing
Single row angular contact ball bearing

Single-row angular contact ball bearings are non-separable radial ball bearings. They have a contact angle of 30° or 40°, allowing them to take higher radial loads. The contact angle runs through the point of contact of the balls with the outer and inner rings. Furthermore, they can also take single-direction axial loads.

The bearing rings have one low and one high shoulder. The cages are made from sheet steel, brass, or polyamide. Moreover, the raceways on the outer and inner rings are oblique to each other. Due to the difference in the manufacturing and shoulder heights, their mounting method differs.

Single-row angular contact ball bearings have three contact angles for high axial load endurance; they are typically used in pairs because of their unique structure. The angular contact ball bearings are ideal for applications that require high bearing rigidity.

How Do Angular Contact Ball Bearings Work?

When a radial load is applied to an angular contact ball bearing, it produces an axial component; this requires a multi-bearing arrangement. The preload increases the rigidity of single-row ball bearings where high running accuracy is required. Smaller contact angles are suitable for high-speed applications, whereas larger ones support higher axial loads.

Angular contact bearings are always assembled in opposite positions with the internal clearance adjusted. They typically comprise pressed steel cages. However, high-precision single-row angular contact ball bearings may have polyamide resin cages.

The internal clearance is determined by adjusting the axial clearance of the shaft. Slight misalignment between the shaft and housing is acceptable in single-bearing assemblies. The value typically lies between 0.10° and 0.15° when the assembly clearance for a preloaded assembly is 0.06°.

High-speed precision angular contact bearings are widely used in high-speed rotating applications. They are handy in low temperatures, high speed, and low vibration. These bearings are also used to support high-speed electric spindles of internal surface grinding machines.

Modern angular contact ball bearings have sufficient roller bearing grease and require no maintenance in various applications. At the same time, the bearings do not dissipate heat when using grease as a lubricant.

Angular Contact Ball Bearing Application

Angular contact ball bearings are widely used when you require rigid axial guidance and combined load support. Moreover, they also prove helpful when moderate to high loads are present on one side, high speed is required, or the bearing arrangement is preloaded.

Common applications of angular contact ball bearings include:

  • Electric motors
  • Pumps
  • Screw chillers
  • Gearboxes
  • Elevator hoists
  • Clutches
  • Compressors

Single-Row Angular Contact Ball Bearing Arrangement

Single row angular contact
Single row angular contact

As angular contact ball bearings are used in pairs, they can be arranged in multiple ways. Single-row angular contact ball bearings with a universal design are typically mounted in the direction of the contact angle; they can handle axial loads in that direction only. Single row bearings are mounted:

Face-to-face: Face-to-face mounted ball bearings can take axial and radial loads in either direction and have a low momentary and alternating radial force capacity; they have a smaller distance between the loading point and the bearing center. However, they can handle more misalignment than other arrangements.

Back-to-back: The other type of single ball bearing arrangement, the back-to-back arrangement is the most common. It accommodates axial and radial loads in all directions due to a larger distance between the loading point and the bearing center. So, back-to-back mounted single row angular bearings can bear large momentary and alternating radial forces.

Tandem: Tandem angular contact ball bearing arrangement has parallel contact lines that allow equal distribution of axial forces. Thus, they can handle heavy axial loads. Single row angular contact bearings in tandem arrangement can bear singe-direction radial and axial loads.

Single-Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings Installation

Angular contact ball bearings are easy to install and take less time. They can be installed face-to-face, back-to-back, or in tandem. Back-to-back installation spreads the contact angle along the axis of rotation. It increases the rigidity, allowing the highest resistance to deformation.

Furthermore, the contact angle converges in the direction of the axis of rotation during installation. The supporting angle becomes less rigid. As the outer rings of the bearings press together, the inner ring sticks out, eliminating the outer ring’s original clearance. Thus, it increases the preload of the bearing.

Due to the contact angles of the bearings in the same directions, the bearings share the working load in the same direction. Make sure that the pairs in series are opposite to each other at both ends of the shaft.

A few precautions can help with the seamless installation of single-row angular contact ball bearings:

  • Make sure you follow the right technique.
  • Heat the inner race of the bearing with an induction heater or arbor press within material limits like lubrication, seal, or cage limit.
  • Avoid using a ball pen to prevent damage to the bearing.
  • Do not use a hammer except a dead blow hammer with an intermediary tool.

Single Row VS Double Row Bearings

Single row vs double row bearing
Single row vs double row bearing

Angular contact bearings of single-row and double-row have unique applications across multiple industries.

Single-row bearings are non-separable ball bearings and have one row of rolling elements. They comprise an outer ring, inner ring, balls, and cage. They are very durable and suitable for high-speed operation. Single-row angular contact ball bearings change the sliding friction between the shaft seat and the running shaft into rolling friction.

On the other hand, double-row angular contact ball bearings have two rows of rolling balls, allowing them to endure bidirectional axial and radial loads. They have a design similar to deep groove ball bearings with tightness between the balls and the raceway. These angular ball bearings are suitable for overturning moments as they have high rigidity. So, you will find them in cars’ front wheel hubs.

Double-row ball bearings have the same structure as single-row angular contact ball bearings in an O arrangement. The contact angle, width, and design of the rings differ.

Difference between Angular Contact And Deep Groove Ball Bearing

Angular Contact Ball Bearings

Angular contact ball bearings have a contact angle between the ball and the ring. The standard contact angle is 15/25 with three types of 40 degrees. Single angular contact bearings can take one-way axial load, radial load, DF combination, and DB combination. At the same time, double-row angular contact ball bearings can support axial, radial, DT combination, and high-speed use. Thus, they are suitable for high-precision, high-speed applications.

Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Deep groove ball bearings are the most widely used with deep raceways. They can support radial and axial loads. They are suitable for smaller axial, radial, moment loads, and radial forces. The bearings have a zero contact angle when bearing radial loads. They have a small friction coefficient and a high-speed limit.

However, when the deep groove ball bearing has a high radial clearance, it acts as an angular contact bearing and can take large axial loads.

Angular Contact Vs Radial Bearing

Radial and angular contact bearings are often confused because of their similar external look. However, they have a different internal structure. Angular contact ball bearings have angled rings that apply pressure on the balls. Properly loaded angular contact ball bearings last longer than radial bearings. Yet frame misalignment can lead to faster deterioration than the latter.

At the same time, radial bearings contain grooves on the outer and inner edges where the balls reside. They are more rigid than radial bearings and are not affected much by alignment differences. Their non-angled surface reduces stress due to the load. However, corrosion can damage radial bearings faster.

Conclusion

Angular contact ball bearings are a favorite choice in high-precision, high-speed applications. Single-row angular contact ball bearings have a single row of rolling elements compared to double-row angular contact ball bearings. These ball bearings are used in pairs to endure large axial and radial loads. Furthermore, radial and deep groove bearings are also used widely for various applications.
