Comprehensive Guide to Front Wheel Bearings: Understanding Types, Manufacturing Process, and Maintenance

For more information about products, the company, or shipping, you can also check out our other FAQs!

The front wheel bearing is an important part of the front suspension, facilitating vehicle movement. Problems with wheel bearings can lead to loss of control of the wheel and a shaky feeling. The wheel assembly ensures the car runs smoothly. It comprises various parts that form the wheel bearing hub collectively. All components must be in good shape for your vehicle to function properly.

What Are Front Wheel Bearings?

Wheel bearings are present within small rings in the wheel hub assembly and help your wheels move freely. Ball bearings and roller bearings are the most common types of wheel bearings.

Ball bearings are in the shape of small balls and are typically sealed. It keeps them free from contamination and dirt. However, you cannot service sealed ball bearings, and they must be replaced when damaged. On the other hand, roller bearings have a cylindrical shape. They are not sealed and thus susceptible to contamination.

How Long do Wheel Bearings Last?

Drivers often do not need to change their wheel bearings as they typically last 75,000 to 100,000 miles. However, the lifespans depend on the manufacturer, load, and daily usage. Rough usage might lead to earlier wear and tear. A strange noise traveling through the vehicle indicates a bad wheel bearing that needs replacement.

Front Wheel Bearing Manufacturing Process

The wheel bearing hub comprises various parts, including the inner and outer races, balls, and the cage. All these parts comprise strong steel, usually 52100 (one percent chromium and one percent carbon). Alternatively, companies use 440C stainless steel when the ball bearings are more prone to rust due to moisture exposure. Moreover, the cage may sometimes be made with molded plastic through injection molding to reduce friction and cost.

Race Manufacturing

The inner and outer races are manufactured by cutting steel to the race’s shape using automatic machines. The cuttings are typically larger to allow changes using heat treatment. These races are then treated in a furnace at 1,550°F for hours according to their size before being dipped in an oil bath.

Now, the races are hard and brittle; they are tempered by heating them at around 300°F and later cooling to make them tough instead of brittle.

Next, the manufacturers use grinding wheels to cut the races into their final shape. Grinding gives it a smooth surface adequate for the balls to roll smoothly. Grinding and lapping the surface produces the right texture of a mirror finish.

Ball Manufacturing

The ball bearings are the next part of the wheel bearing hub, and manufacturing them is a complicated and challenging task. The balls form from a thick wire fed into a machine that breaks it into smaller pieces. Then, the machine smashes both ends of the wire toward the middle through a cold heading. This produces a ball-like shape with a ring (flash) in the middle (like Saturn).

Then, the balls run between two cast iron disks with a rough interior that removes the flash from the balls. One of the wheels has holes that send the balls into the grooves, where the balls move and come out of the other hole. This process takes a few attempts of adding the balls back to the grooves until the balls are smooth.

After smoothing the surface, the balls receive heat treatment to make them tough and hard through tempering. Now, the balls go through another machine with grinding wheels that grind them almost down to their finished size.

Furthermore, the balls go through the lapping machine, which laps them for 8 to 10 hours to obtain their final size. It gives a smooth exterior to the balls to reduce friction when they run between the races.

Cage Manufacturing

The front wheel bearing hub’s next part is the cage containing them to ensure convenient movement. The cage is made of thin metal, and the shape is obtained using a die. The thin sheets are pressed into the die and closed; when opened, the sheets come in the shape of the die. Meanwhile, manufacturing plastic cages is slightly different. Instead of using a die, plastic cage production uses injection molding in which a metal mold, filled with melted plastic, forms the cage’s shape.

Bearing Seal Manufacturing

The bearing seal or bearing retainer is another important component of the wheel bearing assembly. It is an O-shaped rubber seal made from hard rubber that prevents the entry of water into the assembly. At the same time, it also ensures that grease does not leak.

You must also repair the bearing seal when replacing a front wheel bearing. Mostly, they come with the bearing assembly. But if not, you can purchase them individually.

Bearing Snap Ring Manufacturing

The bearing snap ring is made with a circular band of metal. It keeps the roller bearing assembly in place and prevents movement. You need a specially designed snap ring removal tool to remove and install new bearing snap rings.

Bearing Grease

Grease is critical to the wheel bearing hub’s health as it helps reduce friction. This heavy-duty petroleum-based or synthetic grease lubricates high-friction surfaces in the assembly. It differs from motor oil because of its thickness and viscosity needed for lubrication at high temperatures. Always grease your hands with bearing grease when replacing the bearings.

Also, leaving your grease uncovered will contaminate it. So, you must replace it and buy new bearing grease.

Assembly

Once the parts of the front wheel bearing assembly are ready, it is time to assemble them. The manufacturers put the inner race in the outer race at a significant distance to add the ball bearing between them.

After adding the balls, the races are moved to bring them to the center. Next, the cage goes into the assembly and is riveted together properly. At the same time, you can just snap in the steel cage.

The last part of wheel bearing manufacturing before shipping is coating the assembly to avoid rust. It ensures the bearings do not rust, even in high-moisture conditions.

Quality Control and Assurance

Front wheel bearing manufacturing is a controlled process beginning with testing the raw material (steel). As the steel sheets and balls undergo heat treatment and machining, they are tested for toughness and hardness, followed by size and shape inspection. Then, the workers inspect and analyze the smoothness required for the balls to move freely. The balls must be no more than out of round more than 5 millionths of an inch for high-speed bearings and 25 millionths of an inch for inexpensive bearings.

Front Wheel Bearing Cost

Changing a front wheel bearing can cost between $150 and $1000 or more. The overall cost depends on the bearing, hub, and labor price. The price of front wheel bearing can vary depending on your car’s make, model, and variant.

  • Cost of wheel bearing: $50-$120
  • Wheel bearing hub: $200-500
  • Labor: $60-300 (depending on the area)

The average costs for parts of the front and rear wheel bearings are:

Front bearing cost: $150-$300

Rear bearing cost: $190-$310

Wheel Bearing Types

Ball Bearings

Ball bearings are small ball-shaped bearings commonly used in electric motors and skateboards. They are also a part of some automotive bearing assemblies but typically in locations with less pressure and shocks. Ball bearings have a small contact area. At the same time, they can spin in all directions, allowing them to take weight from above and sideways.

Straight Roller Bearings

Straight roller bearings have a cylindrical share with the same diameter throughout. They are well-suited to heavy-duty applications as their shape allows them to spread the radial loads evenly. Compared to ball bearings, they cannot handle too much load from the sides (thrust load). They are typically used in gearboxes.

Tapered Roller Bearings

As the name suggests, these bearings are cylindrical but tapered at one end. So, they have a wider diameter at one end. They are among the strongest bearings as they can take heavy thrust loads, radial pressure, and hard shocks. Tapered roller balls are usually a part of cone-shaped assemblies due to their high weight and shock tolerance. Some vehicles have one assembly with these bearings, whereas others have two in opposite directions.

Wheel Bearing Inspection

Wheel bearings must be inspected and replaced if needed. The bearings come in pairs of inner and outer bearings that ensure smooth movement of the wheels. The bearings and grease reduce friction between the spindle and the wheel. The grease gets contaminated with dirt, dust, and metal particles over time.

Mostly, the rear wheels on front-wheel drive vehicles and the front wheels on rear-wheel drive vehicles have replaceable wheel bearings. Usually, front-wheel drive vehicles have sealed front bearings. However, some might have packable rear bearings. Replacing bearings on four-wheel drive vehicles is complicated, and you must get professional help.

Conclusion

Front wheel bearings are critical to the smooth running of the wheels. Present between the inner and outer race, they reduce friction and facilitate the vehicle’s movement. All running vehicles, including EVs, have wheel bearings. Besides the inner and outer races, the assembly includes balls and the cage. Every vehicle makes, model, and variant may use different bearings according to the needs. We deal in all kinds of wheel bearings and also design them per your requirements.

FAQs

What is the main function of wheel bearing?

Wheel bearings enable the rotation of your wheel without generating high friction. They reduce friction and maintain wheel tracking. All vehicles have specific types of wheel bearings according to their needs. Depending on the vehicle and its requirement, they could be plain, rolling, small, or large. They also contribute to providing wheel speed sensor signals to your vehicle’s drive systems.

Do electric cars have wheel bearings?

Wheel bearings are critical to the smooth functioning of all types of wheels. So, whether you have a fuel-driven or electric car, your wheel still needs wheel bearings. In fact, electric vehicles are heavier and often require bearing replacements due to additional loads. Thus, if you observe any wobbly movement or feel a lack of control on the steering or wheels, check it immediately to replace the wheel bearings if needed.

Do wheel bearings affect brakes?

Wheel breaks and brake rotors are aligned, and damaged wheel bearings lead to increased friction. It eventually obstructs the proper functioning of the brakes and may cause shaky movement. Drivers must take care of the bearings to avoid damage.

Can I replace just one wheel bearing?

Yes, you can replace one wheel bearing if it is only damaged. The cost for multiple bearings is higher than single bearing replacement. However, if both wheel bearings have been working for the same time, it is safer to replace both. Due to wear and tear, the other might start making noise in some time. So, replacing both bearings will save you from the effort of changing the other one a few days later.
